A kinder, gentler Skeletor

Is it me, or am I getting dorkier? While toiling away at the bench today (purifying some DNA, if you're interested), I found myself wistfully watching the clock, and wanting to be at home. Not outside running through fields of golden wheat, or frolicing in the park, but home working on a bioinformatics program. So not only have I passed over into programmer dorkdom, but I've entered the highly esoteric realm of molecular biologist programmer dorkdom. This can't be healthy.

For those of you who are interested, <jargon>the program I'm working on will (hopefully) pattern match large subsets of sequences upstream of genes that are co-expressed in an attempt to find new regulatory elements</jargon> And I'm doing it all in Perl, because Java can kiss my lazy non-object-oriented ass.

Hmmmm....maybe I should have ended that Jargon tag a little bit later in the paragraph....

i don't think it gets dorkier than superfreaks. at least your main dorky interest is useful. so don't worry, we're all in this together.

didofoot, respectfully, you are wrong. he is far dorkier than superfreaks. not that he is not being useful and is probably going to make LOTS more money than us freaks. but dorkier he still is.

i simply cannot agree with you there, fukface, and i say it affectionately. let us think back to three of you piling into a parked car and bouncing around WHILE STATIONARY in front of your incredulous neighbors.

better yet, let us picture my consernation when gene tipped our hand and I was forced to mutter out a truncated explanation of the fjords show to berkeley mike and lily.

shut your mouth. motionless car was brilliant.

if you want to be ASHAMED of such fine works of art, you go right ahead. but i prefer to hold aloft my head, and my bear trap filled uterus, with pride. yes. pride.

now, animal cruel-tay, you know i have no shame for the superfreaks. their powers eclipse mine anyday of the week. i'm just saying they are dorky. but there's no shame in dorky and if there is, well, i will eat shame like it is vienetta.

I think that the level of dorkiness all depends on how the supposedly dorky activity is presented. For example, to make his new love of bioinformatics programming seem hip and "edgy", Jacob should refer to himself as a "biohacker". Instead of writing programs to "pattern match large subsets of sequences upstream of genes that are co-expressed in an attempt to find new regulatory elements", Jacob should simply refer to his activities as "writing l33t programz and scriptz to 0wn genez!!!!!!!". Imagine the respect and admiration that he would get in the molecular biology community if he started talking that way, and also began to point out how he was much more "l33t" than other bioinformatics programmers, and that they were, in fact, "st00pidz". Jacob, if you pursue this crusade of making bioinformatics hip, I can clearly see a Nobel Prize in your future.

dood. hell yeah. please make this dream a reality, biohacker.

urm, happy birthday, biohacker.

Translation for those who are not "l33t":
"Stay tuned to AC for elite scripts that will root your genome. Your DNA was owned."

You are all dorks.

oh. sigh. i thought that was gnomes. like midgits only with pointy hats. genomes doesn't make me nearly as wiggly.

hee hee hee!!! i listened to my new a$$ merchants cd in the car this morning on the way to work and it is so much funnier than i remember! fabioarnold is great! and ed mcmahon is fucking hilarious. i was so pleased.

You got it!?!? I *really* want to see how the cover art turned out....Can you bring it to the Exploratorium?

Posted by: Jacob on October 11, 2002 12:05 PM

hi-ya roger that. over and out.

Posted by: michele on October 11, 2002 12:44 PM

what does it mean if i understood all the l33t speak in that post, but know nothing about computers, programming, or h4xoring?

oh, right.

it means i've been spending too much time around j4cob.
