The smartest lobbying tactic I've ever heard of.

Jacob! How are you?

One of the guys in my office is working on the computer, and I think he figured out the problem - the wires for the fans don't connect to anything. So it has perhaps merely been overheating. He's going to let it run tonight, and we'll give it a day or two to not-crash. This means, hopefully, no wiping of the hard drive. Yay!

Are you and Dianna planning to come down for the San Diego IAM bbq next month? I'll be coming out for it, it'd be nice to see you guys. :)

And why is our friend Mr. Davis wearing a Cubs hat?

"C" for California? Maybe just lazy Photoshopping.

Sarah! Good to hear from you!

The wires for which fans? The big hurking one on top? Or the CPU fan? Or one of the various other little fans?
Did I give you a little black box with stereo connectors on it? Because that's what those wires can connect to. If I didn't give it to you, I can mail it.
THough....I'm not sure that it's the heat. The symptoms were heat-like. But I could touch the heatsink and not get burned, so...

I'm not sure about the SD BBQ....both $$$ and time are a little tight lately. BUT, if we do decide to come out, you'll be one of the first to know, because DAMN would it be good to see you again.

The two big fans both have wires leading from them that end in clipped-wire ends instead of being plugged into something useful. You don't need to mail me anything - the guy working on this is taking care of the entire repair process. Just sit back and bask in the glow of the knowledge that I may well soon have a fully working computer, just like God and you intended. ;)

And yes. Seeing you would be a Good Thing. Keep in touch... you still have my useful contact info, yah?

Since the guy that's taking care of it seems to know his stuff, let him know what the wires with the bare ends were meant to go to stereo connectors that were hooked up to the power supply. I never really did anything with them because they're HELLISHLY loud (especially the giant top one).

I've only got your cell phone #, which doesn't help me much since I hate phones. What's your email address?

You have (e)mail.

Guy working on it is Mitch. There are three companies operating out of one office suite, and I work for two of them. Mitch's computer consulting company is the third one. He's pretty Godlike. My dad took two weeks to say that he didn't know what was up with the computer but it would probably need a new hard drive. Mitch took half an hour and noticed the fan wires. Very impressive.

Excellent! Then he should be able to rewire the fans so that you can use them with or without the fanbus, which is (unfortunately) still floating somewhere about my room.

Posted by: Jacob on June 24, 2003 04:10 PM

hahahaha

What's a fanbus, anyway?

It's the stereo connector thing I mentioned earlier. Power comes in from the power supply and connects to an array of those red/black clip-in speaker connectors you see in the back of receivers. So you can have a lot of fans without needing a huge cable nest of wires connecting to each other.
